Film Industry and the Federalization of Czechoslovakia

The main aim of this bachelor's thesis is to explore and describe changes in Czechoslovak film industry resulting from federalization of Czechoslovakia, which was implemented by Constitutional Act no. 143/1968 Col. On Czechoslovak Federation, effective from 1st January 1969. In its first part the thesis deals with general political atmosphere of fault year 1968 and with particular steps, which had led to the federalization. The second and the most essential section explores the process of separation of film industry on federal principles. The author takes into account legal acts, which implemented this separation and economical side of the separation as well as proposed measures, which were not put into practice and also partial matters connected with federalization such as level of integration of film distribution and foreign affairs. The third part focuses on federal division of Union of Czechoslovak Film and Television Artists, which was however shortly after cancelled by the new political power that had risen after occupation in August 1968. The last section presents brief excursion into the situation and organization changes (not only) in cinematography at the outset of so-called normalization.
From Scribe to Ministerial Counsellor: The Involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the Cinematography of the Forties and Fifties

1 Abstract The thesis focuses on the involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the management of the Film Department of the Ministry of Information during the years 1945 - 1948. His ministe- rial engagement is related to the contemporary strengthening of the importance of literary preparation of the film and to the associated state dramaturgical supervision. Jiří Mařánek belongs to the circle of writers connected on one hand through their affiliation with the interwar avant-garde movements, on the other hand by their postwar involve- ment in the power apparatus that ended by the political and economic changes in the late forties and fifties. His professional fate speaks about the changes of cultural policy of the state, about the institutional development of the cinema and about the relations between literary and cinematic arts. It is a testimonial of what a successful professional career meant for a man of letters and what relationship it had to the cinema. We follow therefore a relatively brief but breakthrough episode of a writer and retired officer in the position of the Ministerial Counsellor, and we try to place its course and causes into a complex network of historical and social contexts and personal motivation. Economic analysis of Czechoslovak New Wave in the Film industry in historical and political context of the 1960s

The goal of the thesis is to compare the profitability of Czechoslovak New Wave movies with the rest of the movies made in 1960s in Czechoslovakia. The comparison uses statistical tests and visualising using boxplots. The comparison consists of three steps; the comparison of gains, the comparison of production costs and the comparison of attendance. The comparison of production costs is supplemented by comparison of the exterior filming typical for Czechoslovak New Wave and by regression model showing which factors had influence on production costs. Among the factors are exterior filming, atelier filming, whole production time and the model contains also dummies: film color, film format and whether the movie is Czechoslovak New Wave movie or not. This analysis is put into Czechoslovak political and economic background since 1945 to 1970. The thesis briefly describes the Czechoslovak New Wave movement and describes the development of Czechoslovak film industry since 1945 to 1970 and its indicators such as number of cinemas and seats, attendance and number of produced movies. 1

Economic History of Authors' Rights and Creative Industries in Czechoslovakia Hana Moravcová Dissertation thesis Abstract The thesis analyzes the impact of cultural policy on creative industries in Czechoslovakia. The first chapter is devoted to economics of authors' rights. It identifies inconsistencies in its three main assumptions, that undermine proper understanding of the effects of copyright and authors' rights. It provides a framework for optimization behavior of authors, that respects that market transactions between authors, users and consumers take place not on one, but on many markets where a work is spread. The second chapter reveals that the emergence of the Authors' Rights Act in interwar Czechoslovakia was the result of the influence of particular interest groups. The most important organizations are identified. Their mutual interconnection and linkage to the state facilitated their ability to directly influence the wording of the new law and its practical application. They used favorable conditions, like interventionist thinking of the society. Moreover, Czechoslovakia had to implement an international copyright treaty, part of the peace treaty signed by Czechoslovakia after the Great War. Communication of film tourism in Prague 2000-2013

The main aim of my thesis was to introduce filmmaking as a possible source of motivation for inbound tourism capital of Prague. My work deals with foreign film tourism in Prague and its development between the years 2000 - 2013. It defines the concept and outlines the history of this phenomenon in the sociological context. I support the theory with several practical world, Czech and Prague's examples. Furthermore I name and describe the institutions which are necessary in communication with foreign film productions. I also present their activities targeted at foreign producers and directors. Then I explain how the basic norms reflect the law. On the development of film production in the Czech Republic, particularly on the decline of interest in the years 2006 - 2010, I demonstrate the importance of such standards. I also describe the world and Czech examples of marketing communications targeted at film tourists. Campaigns are divided according to the type of media that the destination marketing organizations use. My work also contains British research that I apply to film tourism in Prague. Working and influence of Karel Lamač in the film industry of the First Czechoslovak Republic

The submitted diploma thesis is engaged in working of the film industry in Czechoslovakia in period among two world wars, which is seen through the important actor, scriptwriter, director and film entrepreneur Karel Lamač. The issue is researched especially from the perspective of formation and activity of the film companies which were professional associated with the person of Lamač. It is followed up the family background which he came from, and the milieu where he worked the First World War. It further focuses on Lamač's first steps in the field of cinematography after 1918 and on his working at the time of the First Czechoslovak Republic. It is also reflected Lamač's activity as an inventor and a journalistic author, as well as related financial profit from the subsequent sale of patents or licences to the created movies. The thesis tries to clear up the mechanisms that led to exceptional position of this artist in the Czechoslovak film industry, with regard to his professional outreach to the international sphere. The growth of Nollywood against the backdrop of globalization processes in the media world

The Nigerian entertainment industry called Nollywood has for several years been one of the top audiovisual producers worldwide in regards to the volume of media produced. However, its market is to a large extent isolated from the dominant media flows, which has inspired interest for a detailed study of its role in the global cultural scene. The thesis is a theoretical treatise about the history and the present situation of Nollywood, which the author discusses in the context of the two seemingly oppositional paradigms of the globalization discourse: cultural imperialism and cultural globalization. To gather the most up-to-date and the most complex information, the thesis uses theoretical methods, such as the analysis, synthesis and comparison of the articles found in science journals and literature. The text is comprised of three main parts. After a brief introduction into the current situation in Nigeria and the historical development of its audiovisual media, the second chapter discusses the birth of Nollywood for the first time in the Czech academia, as well as its current production and distribution principles.
